A note published on the Presidency of the Council of Ministers’ official website informs that during the Monday phone conversation, Meloni congratulated Aoun on his election by Parliament on January 9 to be his country’s President, which he considered a positive step towards stability in Lebanon.
The Italian prime minister also referred to the deployment of more than 1,000 Italian soldiers in that country as part of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in addition to the dozens of troops operating there within the framework of the Italian Bilateral Military Mission in Lebanon (MIBIL), the source stressed.
She also referred to the Italian-led Military-Technical Committee for Lebanon (MTC4L) in charge of coordinating international support to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), about actions showing the key role the European nations currently played.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani traveled to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, on Friday to meet with Aoun, Foreign Minister Bou Habib, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, to whom he reaffirmed his government’s support for the stabilization and pacification process in Lebanon.
