Bolivian President Highlights Cuba’s Exclusion from Unilateral List

La Paz, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) Bolivian President Luis Arce today praised Cuba's exclusion from the list created unilaterally by the United States Government of countries sponsoring terrorism.

“Reason, truth and justice have prevailed. The United States government has removed Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism, in which it was included unilaterally, arbitrarily and infamously in 2021,” the dignitary said on his X account.

He added that this action is not only a recognition of the sovereignty and the persistent struggle of the Cuban people, but also marks an important step to advance “in the urgent elimination of the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed for more than six decades by the United States on the brave Cuban people.”

He recalled that this demand has been approved by resolution on repeated occasions in the United Nations General Assembly by the vast majority of countries.

“True peace and social justice can only be achieved through mutual respect, non-interference and recognition of the sovereignty of our peoples,” the head of state concluded.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean island confirmed on Tuesday that the White House decided to exclude Cuba from the State Department’s list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.

The US Executive also used the presidential prerogative to prevent action from being taken in US courts against lawsuits filed under Title III of the Helms-Burton Act.

Another measure eliminates the list of restricted Cuban entities that designate a group of institutions with which US citizens and institutions are prohibited from carrying out financial transactions, which has had an effect on third countries.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry said that, despite its limited nature, this is a decision in the right direction and in line with the sustained and firm demand of the Government and people of Cuba, and with the broad, emphatic and reiterated call of numerous governments, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The statement recalled the support for this demand from Cubans living abroad, from political, religious and social organizations, and from numerous political figures from the United States and other countries, which it “thanks everyone for their contribution and sensitivity.”

“It is important to note that the economic blockade and a good part of the dozens of coercive measures that were put into effect since 2017 to reinforce it are still in force, with full extraterritorial effect and in violation of International Law and the human rights of all Cubans,” the statement warns, noting that this entire “economic war” is a stimulus to emigration.
