Ambassadors of the Member States and AU officials are attending the meeting which will last until January 31. The Executive Council will meet on February 12-13 and the Assembly will do so on February 15-16.
During both events’ sessions, the election of the heads of the AU Commission will take place.
The AU theme for 2025 is “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” focusing on reparations for historical crimes and mass atrocities committed against those citizens.
According to a statement, reparations have been a priority since the organization was founded in 1963, and are intended to address the persistent effects of the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism.
The AU Commission is considering the Accra Declaration on Reparations’ recommendations, which include establishing an Office of the AU Special Envoy on Reparations and a Global Reparations Fund.
