The images speak for themselves of the work of the contingent that has taken doctors and other medical professionals from Cuba to more than 50 countries hit by epidemics, such as Covid-19 and Ebola, and natural disasters of the magnitude of earthquakes and hurricanes on several continents.
The event is organized by the MEPs of the Communist Party of Greece and the Cuban Embassy in Belgium and before the European Union, with an opening ceremony that brought together parliamentarians, diplomats and members of the Cuba solidarity movement in Belgium.
The exhibition sums up the spirit of humanism and solidarity that has guided Cuban medical collaboration for more than 60 years, under the central objective of alleviating pain and saving lives around the world, Ambassador Juan Antonio Fernández said in his speech.
The Cuban diplomat noted the premise of bringing hope to the poorest in challenging scenarios, and recalled that this aid has materialized despite the impact of the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the United States has imposed on Cuba for more than six decades. “However, as we have repeated on so many occasions, solidarity cannot be blocked. That is why, the Henry Reeve Brigade is an example that is today exalted with this exhibition,” said Fernández, who rejected the obstacles that prevented the development of the event at the headquarters of the European Parliament.
Dr. Julio Guerra, director of the Cuban Ministry of Health, pointed out that since its creation at the initiative of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, the Henry Reeve contingent has sent 90 brigades to save lives in various parts of the planet, 58 of them in the context of Covid-19.
Regarding Cuban solidarity in general, he shared told the audience that it has covered 165 countries on five continents in the last 60 years, with the participation of more than 600,000 health workers.
A Cuban doctor who has completed five internationalist missions on three continents, from the communities of the Guatemalan quetzal and the Venezuelan Amazon jungle to those of eastern Africa and the ancient cities of Europe, has spoken to you, said the doctor who headed the Henry Reeve brigade that supported Italy in the fight against Covid-19.
At the ceremony, representatives of the Communist Party of Greece at the European Parliament reiterated their support for Cuba and their denunciation of the US blockade.
