The policeman shot himself with his service weapon in a public park in the city of Salto, in the north of the country.

This is the first suicide within the police force in 2025.

A report by the Ministry of the Interior states that the suicide rate among uniformed personnel is 38.2 per 100,000, much higher than that of the general population, which is 21 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Alejandra Alves, departmental referent of the National Police Union (Sipolna) told the press that from that force they reiterate the claims to attend to the persistence of suicide in that body.

She pointed out among the causes “the economic issue, family issues” and “also when we go to a special area where we are paid 65 percent of our salary, where officers with health problems, or with physical affections due to the use of heavy weapons or elements such as the vest, which generate problems in our physical health”.

She also referred to the “overloaded working hours”, among the causes of important emotional problems in the officers”.
