Lebanese President receives authorities from Cyprus and Italy

Beirut, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, received today his counterpart from Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Foreign Minister of Italy, Antonio Tajani, in his first international contacts after assuming the position of head of State.

At the Presidential Palace of Baabda, the Lebanese president thanked the Cypriot dignitary for his support to the nation and his interest in taking bilateral relations to the highest level.

Aoun presented Lebanon’s needs in all areas, in particular economic support and aid to the Armed Forces.

The general also commented on the situation in the south and emphasized the complete withdrawal of the Israeli enemy from the rest of the occupied territories and the deployment of the army on the southern border.

During the meeting, the President noted that with the formation of the new government, the wheel of government work will be set in motion and considered the support of the European Union (EU) to be essential.

Christodoulides conveyed to the President-elect a message of prosperity and stability, in addition to reiterating the firm determination to support Lebanon and work to strengthen relations between the EU and the nation of cedars.

When receiving Minister Antonio Tajani, the Lebanese Head of State highlighted Italy’s assistance, especially through participation among the international forces operating in the nation as part of the UN peacekeeping mission.

He highlighted Lebanon’s firmness in achieving security and stability in the south, and the return of life to constitutional institutions following the election of the President of the Republic and the formation of the government.

In a post on X, the Italian head wished President Joseph Aoun good work in strengthening the path to peace throughout the Middle East.

Tajani also reaffirmed the commitment of the Italian government to strengthen bilateral relations at the economic and commercial level for the benefit of both countries.

As part of the contacts on Friday, Aoun received congratulations from former Lebanese President Michel Aoun and the presidents of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, and Iraq, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid.

After more than two years of power vacuum, the Lebanese Parliament yesterday elected General Joseph Aoun, who led the army since March 8, 2017, as president of the Republic in the second round of voting.
