Argentine social organization rejects dismantling of memory policies

Buenos Aires, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) The Central de Trabajadores de Argentina-Autónoma (CTA-A) expressed its rejection of the dismantling of the memory, truth and justice policies that has been in place for over 15 years.

The CTA-A issued a statement accusing Javier Milei’s Executive of violating human rights, acting against democracy and promoting denial of the crimes committed during the past civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983). In addition, it held him responsible for the destruction of the achievements made, after decades of struggle, by political and social organizations.

According to the statement, the offensive is materialized in hate speech with expressions of vindication of that regime by Milei and Vice President Victoria Villarruel, attacks on human rights leaders, the visit of lawmakers to those convicted of crimes against humanity and the use of legal resources to seek an amnesty for those repressors.

The organization also denounces the dismantling of the teams of survey and analysis of archives of the Ministry of Defense that provided information in the trials on crimes committed during the dictatorship, and the dissolution of the Special Investigation Unit of the National Commission for the Right to Identity, in charge of the search for children stolen in those years.

Moreover, the CTA-A condemns the attempt to close key sites and areas of the Secretariat of Human Rights, as well as the dismissal of hundreds of workers.

The statement also says that the situation of the National Archive of Memory, created in 2003, is worrying. It is the main repository for preserving all the information, testimonies and documents related to the violations committed during the dictatorial regime. “They will not be able to overcome the force of collective memory. Our 30,000 detained-disappeared people guide us. Convinced that the way forward is to fight in the broadest unity of the popular camp, we will continue to demand the reinstatement of those dismissed and the reversal of all these measures,” it concludes.
