The first earthquake occurred at a focal depth of about 8.2 kilometers in the Kon Plong district and reached a magnitude of 3.4, according to the Geophysics Institute’s Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Information Center.
Subsequently, a second earthquake occurred in this area at a similar depth and with a magnitude of 4.2 which caused widespread tremors and was followed by three other telluric movements of 2.7, 3.4 and 2.7, respectively.
According to the Seismic Information and Tsunami Warning Center, eight earthquakes have already been recorded in the Kon Plong district since the beginning of 2025.
These tremors have been occurring frequently and continuously from 2021 until now, the director of the Institute of Geophysics, Nguyen Xuan Anh, said.
The academic explained that it is a stimulated earthquake, which occurs due to the process of storing water from the hydroelectric reservoir impacting the active fault system below.
