Sands called the prices shocking and urged the government to eliminate Value Added Tax (VAT) on a wide range of items.
He blamed the Progressive Liberal Party for much of the skyrocketing food costs over the past three years, The Nassau Guardian online newspaper reported.
Sands recalled a promise that was never kept, which stressed that citizens could expect spinach, broccoli, romaine lettuce, apples, oranges, strawberries, beans, peas, almonds and much more to be VAT-free and price-protected.
Now in opposition, members of the Free National Movement continue to pressure the current administration to eliminate VAT on basic food basket items.
Recently, the prime minister expressed that addressing the country’s cost of living crisis is one of his top priorities, he admitted that despite his administration’s successes, many people are not enjoying it because of high prices.
“Many of the gains we have been making were eaten up by the rising cost of living,” Davis said.
