“Congratulations to my friend in life and in music, Guille Vilar, sensitive and erudite promoter of everything that is valuable in Cuban culture. Born on January 8, 1951, he still gets emotional remembering his eighth birthday, the day Fidel (Castro) arrived in Havana,” the president wrote on his X profile.
On that platform, Díaz-Canel also shared a post by Casa de las Américas President Abel Prieto, who described Vilar as a profound connoisseur of everything genuine in the world’s musical creation.
“Committed to his country and his Revolution, Guille is the soul of the Yellow Submarine,” he wrote.
Vilar is a prominent journalist, cultural promoter, scriptwriter, music critic and director of important musical programs on Cuban radio and television. His professional work has been directed towards the dissemination and critical analysis of national and foreign music in the print press, radio and television.
He has received, among other honors, the Distinction for National Culture in 1994, the Radio Microphone in 2000, the Espiral Eterna 2011 Award from the Leo Brouwer Office, the Cubadisco 2012 Award and the José Antonio Fernández de Castro Cultural Journalism Award in 2014.
