Denmark rejects U.S. interference in Greenland

Copenhagen, Jan 8 (Prensa Latina) Greenland could become independent if its inhabitants wish it, but it will not become a state of the United States, said today the Danish Foreign Minister, Jeppe Kofod.

Yesterday, the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, affirmed that the island territory is not for sale, in the midst of the controversy following statements by the future President of the United States, Donald Trump.

These statements by senior officials of the Nordic country also happen in the middle of the visit of Trump’s eldest son to the Arctic archipelago, who, he said, is traveling as a tourist.

Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders, said Frederiksen, in an interview to TV 2 in which he urged to respect the wishes of the local population, even recognizing the legitimacy of the independence claims.

In this regard, he appealed to future collaboration with the United States, without entering into specific controversies about the role of Trump and his family.

The Greenlandic Prime Minister, Mute Egede, warned last week that the island is not for sale and never will be.

This territory enjoys a wide autonomy from Denmark, despite the fact that Copenhagen controls key issues such as foreign policy and defense.
