“Sixty-six years have passed and Fidel’s arrival in Havana with the Caravan of Freedom on January 8, 1959, continues to be exciting. Welcome to the capital, those who reenact the event today,” the president highlighted on his X profile. The combatants of the Sierra Masetra, who defeated the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista, followed a route of more than 1,000 kilometers throughout the country from January 2 to 8, 1959.
The caravan left Santiago de Cuba (east) and exchanged with residents in different municipalities in the provinces of Granma, Holguín, Las Tunas, Camagüey, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos and Matanzas on its way to Havana.
After several stops in the capital, the popular accompaniment of the historic leader of the Revolution continued to the former Columbia Barracks.
“The more extraordinary the crowd that came to greet us and the more extraordinary the joy of the people, the greater our concern, because our responsibility to history and to the people of Cuba was also greater,” Fidel Castro said at the ceremony that closed the tour.
Every year, on the same date, Cubans of various generations reenact the caravan, as a tribute to the Rebel Army and a way of showing their commitment to the Revolution.
During the stops in the provinces, they pay tribute to the heroes and acknowledge outstanding local workers.
