Cuba does not deserve to be blockaded, because it has never attacked the United States, it imposed the blockade unilaterally and has to remove it without giving anything in return, reiterated the president after his ascension to that intricate point in Granma province on Monday, together with 65 young people from all over the country.
The General Command in La Plata, declared a National Monument in 1978, was the site chosen by the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, to establish the headquarters of the rebel forces in 1958, which at the end of that year defeated the Fulgencio Batista regime.
Speaking to the youths, the president urged the new generations to “do something every day for the benefit of the Revolution” that emancipated the people after decades of excesses by governments under the tutelage of US administrations, he noted.
The tour of these mountains, nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, coincided with the 65th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s return to that place, also with a group of young people in January 1960, as part of the commemoration of the second anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.
According to a TV report, the head of State was also accompanied by the Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Roberto Morales; the first secretary of the Young Communist League (UJC), Meibis Estevez; and top local authorities.
During the trip, they visited the house of the Medina family, who helped the Rebel Army and its commander, Fidel Castro, during the fighting in that region.
They also learned from the historian of the General Command in La Plata aspects of the site and the events that took place there.
At a meeting with Díaz-Canel, the young people expressed satisfaction with the direct contact with that decisive stage of Cuba’s history, which encourages and provides energy to overcome the challenges of the current historic context, they pointed out.
On his X profile on Sunday, the president had expressed his impressions “in the places visited by Fidel Castro, Raúl Castro, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Camilo Cienfuegos, Ramiro Valdés, Guillermo García, Celia Sánchez, Vilma Espín, and an endless list of heroes and heroines,” he wrote.
“We renewed our commitment to them and to the Revolution they made. The history held by the land we walked on is as fascinating as the mountains that surround it. To make it even more joyful, we were accompanied by enthusiastic and grateful youths, we wished each other a happy 2025 and long live Free Cuba,” the head of State added.
