The Brazilian Government, which takes over the leadership of the bloc this year, made the announcement on Monday, and Indonesia thanked both the South American country and Russia, which assumed the rotating presidency in 2024.

A statement from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry affirmed that this nation’s incorporation into the BRICS will help give greater prominence to the Global South nations and establish a more balanced world order.

The Foreign Ministry hailed BRICS as a significant platform for Indonesia to strengthen South-South cooperation and expressed its commitment to work with partners to address global issues such as climate change and food security.

This achievement reflects Indonesia’s increasingly active role in global affairs and its commitment to strengthen international cooperation for a more inclusive and balanced global order, the statement said.

The BRICS accounts for around 40 percent of the global population and 37 percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by purchasing power.

Other nations also agreed to join in another category of the bloc, as associates, and would be Cuba, Bolivia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Nigeria, Turkiye, and Algeria are expected to confirm their participation.
