More than 100 aftershocks of the 6.3 earthquake in El Salvador

San Salvador, Jan 6 (Prensa Latina) More than 100 aftershocks to the earthquake of 6.3 magnitude on the Richter scale, which happened yesterday, reported today the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN).

The telluric event was reported on Sunday around noon off the coast of the department of La Paz and since then the movements have continued with magnitudes up to 4.9 on the scale.

Authorities attribute these events to processes of accommodation of the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates.

MARn reported that from 11:18 a.m. on Sunday until 6:30 a.m. on Monday, 118 aftershocks were registered, of which 19 were felt by the population.

Civil Protection reports indicate that about ten houses were slightly damaged, while the Comandos de Salvamento stated that between 10 and 15 houses at national level were slightly damaged in different cities of the country.

Likewise, the viewpoint located in El Boquerón National Park and another one in the municipality of Usulután Norte were damaged, while in the area of Coatepeque lake, in Santa Ana, rock falls and slight landslides were reported in the volcanoes of San Vicente and San Salvador.

After Sunday’s setback, some Salvadorians expressed their fear of a tremor of more than seven degrees, due to the frequent tremors reported in the national territory, among them in the department of La Unión, where more than 1,500 aftershocks have been reported since December 8.
