Guatemala City, Jan 6 (Prensa Latina) The official Diario de CentroAmérica here today called the 18.2 tons of drugs seized in 2024 a historic milestone against drug cartels and their respective drug lords in Guatemala.

That total exceeds what was confiscated in the first year of the last seven administrations, which sets a precedent in the fight against organized crime, said the newspaper.

The statistics reflect an increase of 229.17 percent compared to the first year of Alvaro Arzu’s administration (1996) and 50.13 percent compared to the same period of Alfonso Portillo’s administration (2000).

In comparison with the Executive of Jimmy Morales (2016), the increase was 42.12 percent, and 33.67 percent with respect to Alejandro Giammattei (2020), he pointed out.

In 11 and a half months of the current administration, he remarked, anti-narcotics forces seized cocaine worth 1.871.7 million quetzals (almost $243 million), he added.
