Paraguay calls for efforts to be focused on fighting corruption

Asunción, Jan 3 (Prensa Latina) The fight against corruption is considered one of the main challenges for Paraguayan authorities today, according to an editorial in the newspaper Última Hora.

The publication quoted Vincenzo Turturro, papal nuncio, who described this scourge as “the greatest social injustice that exists.”

The text recognizes that citizens often identify the phenomenon as an unrelated event, but in reality, due to its consequences for the population, it is necessary for everyone to combat it as a priority.

The column states that politics must work to improve the lives of citizens, but when it encounters the scourge of corruption, social debts accumulate, which “means that something is being done wrong.”

Última Hora reflects another statement by Turturro when he recognizes that “peasants and indigenous people – the backbone of Paraguayan society and mark its identity – live in the most serious situations of vulnerability,” and attributes this to the levels of corruption existing in access to resources. The study “Patterns of Behavior, Governance and Corruption in the Public Sector of Paraguay” by the General Directorate of Surveys, Statistics and Census with the support of the United Nations Development Program, recognized that “corruption is a reality that threatens development.”

This phenomenon is characterized by “low levels of institutionality, absence of control mechanisms and low level of awareness regarding the impact of corruption, among others.”
