Fighting increased between military and armed groups in Colombia

Bogotá, Jan 3 (Prensa Latina) Recent reports from Admiral Francisco Cubides, the Commander General of the Armed Forces, indicate a marked increase in military confrontations during the year 2024. Specifically, there had been a 52 percent escalation in clashes, totaling 447 engagements, suggesting an intensified military offensive aimed at safeguarding the Colombian people.

According to the general, last year, the armed forces carried out successful offensive operations that have weakened criminal structures throughout the country.

He assured that the more than 220,000 members of the Armed Forces (soldiers, sailors, and airmen) attacked illicit economies, drug trafficking, legal mining, extortion, kidnapping, smuggling, irregular migration, and money laundering, based on the guidelines set out by President Gustavo Petro.

He also added that the offensive operations prevented 114 attacks, 44 percent more than in 2023.

Concerning the fight against drug trafficking, he reported that more than 620 tonnes of cocaine had been seized, 35 percent more than the previous year.

This figure is equivalent to 73 percent of the 820 tonnes of cocaine seized by the security forces, including the National Police.

‘These achievements are also the result of international cooperation, which led to important interventions in Latin America, the United States, Europe and Australia,’ he said.
