Cuban ties with BRICS are highlighted despite US pressure

Havana, Jan 3 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is officially an associate member of BRICS despite the United States' efforts to isolate the Caribbean country, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said today on the social network X.

Despite “imperial efforts to isolate us, our small nation was admitted this year as an associate member of the BRICS group” (initials of Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, which more than 30 countries have joined), he wrote.

The Cuban foreign minister stressed this block is “a novel instance of agreement and cooperation that brings together a significant economic, productive, technological, population, territorial and natural wealth potential.” He also pointed out that with all member countries, the island develops very good relations and shares similar purposes. “It is an opportunity that opens up new commercial, investment and cooperation opportunities for us, which we must know how to take advantage of.”

Cuba was approved under this status in October 2024 during the summit of that group held in the Russian city of Kazan, along with 12 other nations, which was made official last Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

In addition to the Cuban archipelago, the BRICS joined as partners, Algeria, Belarus, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Experts highlight that Cuba’s incorporation into the bloc will allow it to insert itself into its various cooperation formats, taking advantage of its options to overcome the economic crisis, caused essentially, by Washington’s hostile policy for more than six decades.

Likewise, the Cuban contribution will be able to focus on its biotechnological development, the production of medicines and the national capacity to promote scientific and technological cooperation.
