Egypt calls for an inclusive and independent Syria

Cairo, Jan 2 (Prensa Latina) Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty today defended Syria's independence and territorial integrity, while calling for an inclusive society that reflects the country's diversity.

The North African country’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the call came during a telephone conversation between Abdelatty and his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shaibani.

According to the report, the head of Egyptian diplomacy stressed the importance of adopting a comprehensive and inclusive political approach involving all Syrian national forces to reflect the social, religious, sectarian and ethnic diversity of this Levantine country.

He reiterated Cairo’s full support for the Syrian people and their legitimate aspirations.

Abdelatty urged all Syrians to put the national interest first, promote national stability and safeguard state institutions.

He also expressed Egypt’s hope that the political transition following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad will be inclusive and entirely Syrian-led, free from external imposition or interference.

The meeting was the first official contact between Syria’s new transitional government and Cairo since the fall of al-Assad.

Last week, an official Egyptian source denied press reports of an imminent visit by an official delegation to Damascus to meet with the new Syrian authorities.

Several Arab capitals have already sent delegations to Damascus to meet with the leaders of the Islamist alliance that toppled al-Assad.

The Egyptian daily recalled that the coalition is led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, which was once part of Al-Qaeda, and stressed that Cairo has been fighting radical formations operating in the Sinai Peninsula for years.

As a result, the Egyptian government has adopted a wait-and-see approach, the publication stressed.
