Ethiopian National Palace opens to public for first time (+Photos)

Addis Ababa, Dec 29 (Prensa Latina) The Ethiopian National Palace has opened its doors to the public for the first time, following an extensive restoration process, considered an important step in the preservation of national history and cultural legacy.

The Prime Minister’s Office revealed that the repair efforts initiated by Head of Government Abiy Ahmed began with the Grand National Palace, now Unity Park, and continued with the revitalization of this iconic monument.

The former Imperial Palace now stands as a testament to our nation’s journey, embodying the resilience, art and vision of our people, said the message.

By restoring it to its former glory, we honor our past and create a lasting symbol of pride and inspiration for future generations. The Palace Museum has now become a site for all, the Office concluded.

The French Development Agency contributed funds to the restoration of the National Palace and its park, as well as to the works to transform the site into a museum.

In response to a request from Ethiopia in 2019, France pledged to support local authorities in the management of their national heritage, of which the building is part.

An emblematic government building, it was the last residence of Emperor Haile Selassie (1930-1974) and was abandoned after he was overthrown in a military coup for several years before being used as the residence of the president and as a venue for state functions. It had never been opened to the public until today.

The premises boast a neoclassical design and a strong art deco influence. The bas-reliefs on the main façade illustrate the history of Ethiopia which, together with the gardens that surround it, constitutes an important heritage site of great cultural, historical and aesthetic interest.
