With a long career in Cuban cinema, theater and television, Núñez has also starred in international films.
At the 44th edition of Havana’s Film Festival, she was awarded the Coral of Honor as an acknowledgement of her work in Latin American cinema.
In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina, she recalled that in the 1960s and 1970s, journalists called her and fellow actress Daisy Granados “the faces of Cuban cinema.” There were two of us then, she said.
At that time, two actresses from Germany, Spain, Russia and other countries often came to Cuba, and then Daisy and I often went out to represent our films abroad, such as “Memories of Underdevelopment,” “Lucía” and “La Primera Carga al Machete,” she recalled.
In Mexico, Spain and Venezuela they called us like that, “the faces of Cuban cinema.” Time passed and there were many faces in cinema, with the possibility of counting on figures like Sergio Corrieri, Luis Alberto García, Isabel Santos and a constellation of actors, because Cuba is full of talent, she noted. It happens here as in Brazil, there are many talented actors and actresses of quality and artistic sensitivity. We are lucky, she added.
Regarding her relationship with the Cuban people, the star of “Lucía” pointed out that she goes out every day ready to have a good day, and perhaps she is not aware of how much her people love her, but many people stop her to ask her about what she is doing, if there is anything new coming up.
Sometimes I cannot answer everyone, because sometimes they harass me with questions and I would like to answer everything but I cannot always, the actress apologized.
“But for me it is very gratifying that people are interested in what I am doing, what I did, why I did it, and the result of all that,” she concluded.
