According to Antonio Subí, general director of the main tobacco company in this central province, 278 kilometers east of Havana, the project is part of the change in the energy matrix in the sector and seeks stability in the processing and selecting the tobacco leaves for export.
At the same time, another group of producers is making progress in the installation of drip irrigation systems, a method that contributes to saving resources, increasing independence from traditional fertilization methods and using water efficiency to obtain healthier and more robust plants.
Cuban tobacco growers are also working on the completion of controlled curing houses, as well as on other projects for the seedbed system in order to increase production, sustain the delivery of raw materials for the domestic industry and comply with sales to other countries.
According to Linnel Marrero, a producer with vast experience in the sector, actions such as these place Cuba in good conditions to maintain tobacco as one of the sectors of biggest growth and contributions to the country’s economy, especially because they raise the quality and prestige of the leaf in the market.
The use of elements for the automatic control of drying tunnels and the acquisition of machinery for pruning seedlings are part of the actions that Cuba is undertaking to ensure the 2024-2025 harvest, when more than 25,000 tons of leaves are expected to be produced nationwide.
