Russia might use Oreshnik system again, Putin warns

Moscow, Dec 26 (Prensa Latina) Russia might use the Oreshnik missile system again if necessary, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday. "If it is necessary and we see that the use of more powerful medium-range weapons is required, of course, we will use it. But we are in no hurry," the Russian president told reporters, after the conclusion of the Summit of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.

Russia “always responds reciprocally” to attacks on its territory, noted the president, adding that at the moment the country “does not have many Oreshnik systems,” which are “a powerful weapon designed to solve certain tasks.”

On November 21, Russia successfully tested the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile in a hypersonic configuration without nuclear weapons. The Oreshnik has a multiple individually guided warhead, MIRV (multiple independently reentry vehicle).

The test, part of a combined attack on a defense company in Ukraine, was carried out in response to the use of US and British long-range missiles in Ukrainian attacks on facilities in Russia’s internationally recognized territory, particularly in the Kursk and Bryansk provinces.

Putin stated that the Oreshnik systems will go into mass production and will be incorporated into the Strategic Missile Forces.

His Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, said that the Oreshniks will also be deployed in his country.
