The former soldiers José María Lete, Rogelio Garmendia and Pedro Buzó were prosecuted with imprisonment as part of the case that investigates abuses committed in the 10th Infantry Battalion in the city of Treinta y Tres, east of here.

Lete was charged with “multiple offences of deprivation of liberty, violent indecent assault, abuse of authority against detained persons and grievous bodily harm.”

Garmendia, meanwhile, was charged with abuse of authority, grievous bodily harm and deprivation of liberty, while Buzó faces charges of repeated offences of abuse of authority and grievous bodily harm.

The incidents under investigation took place between April 12 and 15, 1975, when 39 teenagers, most of them students from the Lyceum No. 1 de Treinta y Tres and members of the Young Communist League, were arrested at their homes by order of the military justice.

For 20 days the boys (under the age of 13) were subjected to physical and psychological torture, including beatings, electric shocks and sexual abuse, in the case of the women.

In addition, they were banned from continuing their studies and their parents had their parental rights revoked.
