More than twenty supporters of the so-called Carbonero team were arrested by police in Rio de Janeiro in October, for incidents that occurred in the lead-up to their team Peñarol´s match against Botafogo, in the semi-final of the Libertadores Cup.
Currently, two people remain detained in the Bangú Penitentiary.
Another 20 were released but are banned from leaving Brazil and are under electronic monitoring until the Justice Department determines a final sentence in their cases.
The only detainee who returned to Uruguay was a minor.
According to a letter released here, the relatives of the detainees demanded the authorities for an “urgent meeting” to address the situation that they believe has “a humanitarian dimension which obliges the Uruguayan state, especially its diplomatic partners, to get involved,”
