The Presidency made the Decree public, stating that it is an act of clemency inspired by the 50th anniversary of national independence, Christmas, and New Year, “with the aim of giving those sentenced to deprivation of liberty an opportunity for social and family reintegration”.
He added that the decision responds to the quest for the climate of harmony, clemency, indulgence, understanding, and fraternity that will guide the celebration of this important anniversary, as the high feeling of patriotism and love for the homeland may include citizens serving prison.
The name of José Filomeno dos Santos, son of the late former Angolan president José Eduardo Dos Santos, who as former president of Angola’s Sovereign Fund was found guilty in the case known as “500 millions”.
In 2022, the Supreme Court sentenced him, along with three others, from five to eight years in prison for embezzlement, fraud, and influence peddling, committed in an illicit transfer of 500 million dollars from the National Bank of Angola to a bank account in London.
After a process of appeals to the Constitutional Court and a new review of evidence, the conviction was confirmed last July and the payment of fines and compensation to the State of more than 8,517,000 dollars.
