Egypt, Russia and Arab countries discuss Syria’s fate

Cairo, Dec 23 (Prensa Latina) The Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, held talks with his counterparts from Russia and several Arab nations on the fate Syria, in the wake of Bashar al-Assad’s overthrow and the coming to power by an Islamist alliance, an official source reported today.

During a telephone conversation with the head of Russian diplomacy, Serguei Lavrov, both parties reaffirmed the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

They also agreed to coordinate efforts to support Syria during its transition phase.

They emphasized the need to prioritize the interests of all Syrians and called for a comprehensive political process without foreign interference.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty also discussed the issue in recent hours with his counterparts from the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Iraq and Algeria.

In separate telephone conversations, the official touched upon the subject with Emirati Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf.

The discussions focused on recent developments in Syria, and in them the Egyptian diplomat reaffirmed Cairo’s strong support for its neighbor.

He also emphasized the importance of respecting its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity while stressing the need to increase concerted regional and international efforts to restore stability there, the released indicated.
