Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasized that this infrastructure “is a creation of the Panamanian people and a golden conduit that promotes global connectivity.”
The spokeswoman recalled that Beijing has historically supported the struggle of the Central American people for the sovereignty of the canal, mentioning the demonstrations in China during the 1960s in solidarity with that country.
“China will continue to respect Panama’s sovereignty over the canal and recognize its status as a permanently neutral international waterway,” she added.
Mao Ning expressed confidence that, under efficient Panamanian management, this work will continue to contribute to the exchange between peoples and the well-being of humanity.
The remarks come amid diplomatic tensions following comments by Trump, who criticized the tariffs and suggested the US might seek to regain control.
The president of the Central American nation, José Raul Mulino, responded that the canal is and will continue to be Panamanian, emphasizing his country´s sovereignty and independence.
