Trump’s threats to retake Panama Canal rejected

Panama City, Dec 22 (Prensa Latina) As of today, without an official government response, several political parties and media outlets have condemned threats from US President-elect Donald Trump regarding the potential retaking of the Canal.

In its message on X, the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) demanded that the government and the Foreign Ministry respect sovereignty in the face of unacceptable statements by the next occupant of the White House.

Trump on Tuesday demanded the return of the interoceanic waterway, which he considered a vital national asset for his country, and threatened to take it back, citing exorbitant prices for US ships.

The Panama Canal was built by the United States, which inaugurated it in 1914 and administered it until its transfer to the Panamanian State on December 31, 1999, as established in the Torrijos-Carter Treaties signed on September 7, 1977, in Washington by former Presidents, Omar Torrijos (1929-1981) and Jimmy Carter.

December 31 will be the 25th anniversary of the canal in Panamanian hands.

As the PRD points out in its message, the interoceanic passage was recovered by the leadership of Omar Torrijos, not for the benefit of foreign powers.

The text of the PRD quotes: “Panama was not given the Canal, we recovered it and expanded it for our economic development”.

The analytical magazine El Periódico de Panama questions the government of José Raúl Mulino, calling its position submissive, for not having pronounced itself on this issue.

The newspaper states in its editorial that only 28 days after taking office in Washington and 35 years after the cruel and criminal invasion ordered by another Republican, George Bush, which destroyed the country and murdered thousands of innocents, but in the background intended to recover the Canal, under the pretext of arresting Manuel Antonio Noriega. Trump’s declaration is the most serious treat against Panama.
