Lebanese army seizes military centres belonging to Palestinian groups (+Photos)

Beirut, Dec 21 (Prensa Latina) The Lebanese army announced today the seizure of military centres belonging to Palestinian organisations, as part of the extension of state authority in several regions of the country.

The military institution announced the seizure of facilities in the northern Bekaa region belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command and the Fatah Intifada movement.

It said in a statement that large quantities of weapons, ammunition and military equipment had been seized during the operation.

The Lebanese Armed Forces confirmed the continuity of the operations to seize military sites occupied by Palestinian organisations inside the national territory, within the framework of maintaining security and stability.

The operation is part of the national plan to deploy and strengthen the Lebanese Army in accordance with the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

As part of the ceasefire agreement with Israel, the Lebanese Army began on November 27 to reinforce its deployment in the southern sector of the Litani region and extend state authority in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force (Unifil).

The ceasefire stipulates that Tel Aviv will not take any military action against Lebanon and will gradually withdraw its forces south of the Blue Line over a period of up to 60 days, in addition to the parties’ commitment to abide by Resolution 1701.

Following the 2006 war, the Security Council adopted Resolution 1701 on August 11, 2006, calling for a complete cessation of hostilities, the deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon, the parallel withdrawal of the Israeli army behind the Blue Line and the reinforcement of Unifil.

It also reaffirmed, as in all previous resolutions, its strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of Lebanon within its internationally recognised borders.
