Haitian government condemns burning of hospital by gang members

Port-au-Prince, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) The Haitian government described as barbaric the partial burning of a reference hospital in the capital, where an offensive against gang members continues.

The coalition of gangs called “Let Us Live Together” threw Molotov cocktails against the Bernard Mevs Hospital, which was paid for with private funds, and which is a reference center recognized for its experience in traumatology and neurosurgery.

The four operating rooms, the imaging room, two state-of-the-art scanners, laboratories, and the pediatric consultation were destroyed. The accounting and administration departments were looted, in addition to ending the useful life of expensive equipment unique in Haiti.

The digital newspaper Haiti Libre noted that the damage is considerable and amounts to several million dollars, fortunately, no loss of human life was reported.

Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier condemned these acts and reiterated his team’s absolute determination to fight armed gangs and punish criminals.

“This act of violence, directed against a vital asset for the population, constitutes a serious violation of human dignity, national security, and the fundamental right to health. Attacking such a symbol of life is equivalent to attacking the very foundations of our Nation,” expressed a government statement.

The attack on the Bernard Mevs Hospital is a hard blow to the health system, which is already severely affected by the forced closure of several health centers in Port-au-Prince, including the General Hospital, the Sanatorium, the French Hospital, and the Saint-François de Sales among others, recalled Haiti Libre.
