Ecuador strengthens vigilance over presence of bird flu in Colombia

Quito, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) The Agency for Regulation and Control of Plant and Animal Health (Agrocalidad) of Ecuador announced that it has strengthened surveillance at poultry production sites in the face of the confirmation of bird flu in neighboring Colombia.

The entity indicated that it maintains constant training, through face-to-face and virtual workshops, to timely detect clinical symptomatology of the disease and for the implementation of biosecurity measures.

Agrocalidad added that more than 46 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the country against bird flu, which for 509 days has not been presented in production farms of the national territory.

In recent years, Ecuador has been affected by outbreaks of this viral pathology on farms and in wild sites.

Since November 29, 2022, an animal health emergency was declared in the country, which was in force until May 2023, during which time hundreds of thousands of birds died, many from the disease and others were slaughtered.

While that influenza predominates in birds, it can also be transmitted to humans and symptoms often include sore throat, cough, fever, runny or stuffy nose, headache, muscle or body aches, fatigue and shortness of breath.
