The mobilization aims to support current pension reforms under debate in the National Congress, to offer pensioners compensation that covers all their needs after their working lives.
This system is currently in the hands of the Pension Fund Administrators, a model imposed during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), which profits from workers’ contributions and gives miserable pensions.
“It is not enough to just tweet, we need to be able to deploy ourselves in the territory,” said Frente Amplio president Constanza Martínez, calling on the entire population to mobilize and participate massively. She also said that politicians should listen, and citizens must be present.
The government proposes using two points for a public social security system, one to improve the situation of women, particularly those dedicated to care tasks, and the rest for the personal account of the contributors.
The right-wing opposition argues that the entire amount should be allocated to individual workers’ accounts. They claim this approach benefits Pension Fund Administrators, who manage these funds and profit from financial speculation or by investing in both domestic and international companies.
Regarding the national mobilization called by the FA, the Minister of Labor, Jeannette Jara, said that public opinion is important in this matter, and the head of the Treasury, Mario Marcel, indicated that it should not be a cause for alarm for anyone.
