Lin Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Beijing is closely following the situation and extended its sincere condolences to the government and people of Vanuatu.
He also expressed the wish that they overcome the hardship and restore their current lives and production as soon as possible.
The spokesman pointed out that the Chinese medical team in Vanuatu is actively collaborating with local hospitals to treat the injured.
In addition, Chinese companies in the region mobilized machinery and resources to assist in the rescue efforts, actions that have been welcomed by the government and the population.
“China will maintain close communication with the government of Vanuatu and provide timely support for relief efforts,” he added.
After the earthquake, the Chinese embassy in that country verified the safety situation of Chinese citizens residing in the country and so far confirmed the death of two Chinese nationals and two injured.
According to the spokesman, the diplomatic headquarters sent personnel to the place to assist in the medical care of the injured and in the subsequent steps related to the deceased.
