Amid challenges, Latin America leads energy transition

Quito, Dec 18 (Prensa Latina) Latin America is leading the evolution into a sustainable energy model, while dealing with challenges such as climate change, said on Wednesday the executive secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization (Olade), Andrés Rebolledo.

When presenting the “Energy Outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean 2024”, Rebolledo referred to the energy crisis gripping some countries in the region, and called for diversification of generation sources, as well as giving priority to integration.

In this regard, Olade expert Fabio García recalled that 77 percent of the new capacity installed in the previous year was renewable: 16 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy, seven GW of wind and two GW of hydroelectric.

Rebolledo urged the region to promote the development of technologies such as “offshore wind” and energy storage, to consolidate its countries as global leaders in energy transition.

The OLADE report hails the region’s progress in this area, even though some nations, such as Ecuador, are suffering from electrical rationing and have turned to neighboring nations to reduce the problem’s impact.

This reinforces the importance of prioritizing diversification of energy sources and something that is very significant for OLADE: energy integration, Rebolledo noted, while advocating the approach of the energy market from the point of view of transmission and transportation.

For his part, Olade’s director of Studies, Projects and Information, Fitzgerald Cantero, referred to how electricity generation is increasing to the point that by the end of the year the region will have produced 27 percent more energy than its demand in 2024.

However, Quito-based Olade’s study indicates that there are still 17 million people without access to this basic service, which is why the organization keeps urging countries to encourage public policies in this sector.
