Opposition leader calls for an end to migration from Syria to Germany

Berlin, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) German political opponent and member of the Christian Conservative Party (CDU), Friedrich Merz, on Monday urged a reinforcement of the German external border and an end to migration from Syria into this country, reported the Tagesschau agency.

Shortly after the fall of the government in Syria and the coming to power of armed extremist groups, major debates about migration followed suit in the Federal Republic.

In particular, conservative and right-wing parties see the situation as a reason to stop accepting more refugees, the news outlet reported.

For the moment, the situation must be monitored very closely, the CDU leader said.

However, the conservatives are reluctant to accept any more refugees from Syria starting now, because those coming might have been members of the army under deposed president Hafez El Assad, Merz indicated, according to the local press.

Of the nearly one million people from Syria, 210,000 are currently working and paying taxes in Germany.

Most of the foreign doctors in Germany come from Syria and 15 percent of them could be deported under the CDU’s plans, the digital media Katapult reported.

The new chairman of the Left Party, Jan van Aken, rejected in a press release this CDU demand as inhumane and called for an immigration policy that puts people’s welfare first and respects their rights.
