A 13-year-old girl in O’Higgins and two senior citizens from the Metropolitan Region and Aysen died of the disease. Another person who passed away in the BioBio region is still under investigation.
Christian Garcia, director of Epidemiology at MINSAL, informed that deaths due to this bacterium are not common, as the disease responds satisfactorily to antibiotics.
Regarding infections, Garcia reported that pneumonia cases increased in September, while they remained relatively stable in October and November, which is a good sign.
Mycoplasma pneumonia is a bacterium with circulation cycles every 4-8 years, usually affecting children and generating outbreaks mainly in closed environments like home, educational centers and workplaces.
