Trump’s massive deportation threats unnerve Salvadorans

San Salvador, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) Reiterated threats from the United States president elect Donald Trump of deporting thousands of immigrants has triggered alarms among Salvadorans.

The latest estimates by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) indicate that more than 200,000 Salvadorans, or 14 percent of all aliens under such a status, face final orders of deportation from the US.

ICE data showed that an estimated 1,445,549 immigrants not currently under detention at the Service’s facilities are threatened by orders of removal.

A Pew Research Center study in 2023 assured that the Salvadoran community in the United States is the third-largest Hispanic population, adding that four out of every 100 Hispanics in that country are Salvadorans.

The main concern for government and the population at large is that deportations could have a direct effect on remittances, one of the local economy’s main pillars.

According to experts estimates, an eventual expulsion of Salvadorans from the US would represent a devastating effect of such magnitude that the country would fall into a Haiti-like poverty scenario.
