Honduras registers decrease in homicide rate

Tegucigalpa, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) Honduras today recorded a decrease in the homicide rate compared to previous years, reported the Observatory of Violence of the National Autonomous University of this Central American nation.

According to the director of this institution Migdalia Ayestas, it is expected to end the year with a rate of 27 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, a reduction of 7.4 points in relation to 2023, which registered 34.5.

Ayestas emphasized that there are fewer Hondurans dead and it is important to establish this because lives lost do count and strategies to curb violence and crime must aim to improve security, El Libertador reported.

According to the source, the official stressed the importance of security so that people can walk in public spaces without fear of being assaulted or robbed.

She explained that common crimes, although difficult to predict due to their opportunistic nature, require criminal investigation to punish those responsible and pointed out that extortion requires greater reporting of this type of crime.

On the other hand, she referred to violence against women and stated that a significant reduction is projected with a rate of 4.8 femicides per 100 thousand inhabitants at the end of 2024, which reflects a decrease of 3.8 points compared to 2023.
