Havana’s 45th Film Festival assigns collateral awards

Havana, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) The 45th International Film Festival of Havana today hosted the assignment of the event’s collateral awards, granted by various institutions to their favorite works in competition.

Most awards went to Brazilian film Manas, a debut by director Marianna Brannand.

The Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) awarded short fiction film Azul Pandora, by Cuban Alan González, who praised the recognition and all those striving to make films in Cuba. The Agrarian University of Havana gave the Pangea award to the Brazilian fiction film Manas.

Brannand said her film reflects a very harsh reality, of violence against women, which exists not only in Brazil, but throughout the world, and that is why she hopes that other directors will deal with such thorny subjects in their films as part of reality.

Revista Cultural Así and the company Aldaba Trinidad assigned their award – for the first time ever- , to Raíz, a Peruvian-Chilean co-production, directed by Franco García, which tells a story deeply connected to Quechua culture and contemporary cultural traditions.

The Cuban Association of Cinematographic Press awarded La cocina, directed by Alfonso Ruizpalacios.

The collateral prize of TV channel Cubavisión Internacional was awarded to the documentary Water of life, a co-production of the United States, Chile, Honduras and El Salvador, by director Will Parrinello.

The collateral prize awarded by Casa de las Américas went to Sugar Island, directed by Joanne Gómez, from the Dominican Republic, and to the fiction feature film Sujo, by directors Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, from Mexico, also secondly acknowledging Manas, by Marianna Brannand.

The Brazilian feature also won the award given by the Federation of Film Clubs of Cuba. The Roque Dalton Award, granted by Radio Habana Cuba, was given to the film Alí Primera, by Venezuelan director Daniel Yegres.

The recognition from the Martin Luther King Center also went to the feature film Manas, from Brazil.

And the Cine plaza Award went to La cocina, a Mexican-American feature film by filmmaker Alfonso Ruízpalacios.

The Federation of Image and Sound Schools of Latin America awarded Quién Empieza el Fuego, from Argentina.

The closing ceremony of the 45th International Festival of New Latin American Cinema will also take place tonight at the Charles Chaplin cinema in Havana.

The Coral awards will be given to the best films in the categories of fiction feature film, first work, short film, documentary, script, animation, poster and industry, among others.

The organizers will close this edition that officially ends on Sunday under the premise “Live cinema, live cinema” , followed by the invitation to filmmakers to participate in the 2025 contest.
