Dengue cases rise in Panama

Panama City, Dec 13 (Prensa Latina) Health authorities in Panama warned about the increase in dengue cases in the population, with a greater impact on older adults.

According to the Ministry of Health report (Minsa), 29,988 cases have been registered until now. In 2023, 17,000 infected cases were reported, an increase that they estimate is alarming despite the existing preventive measures.

The epidemiologist of Minsa, Blas Armién, told the TVN news channel that of the nearly 30,000 cumulative cases, 80% have no signs of alarm, nine percent have them and one percent is serious, which is a sign that the disease remains a threat to public health in the Central American country.

Minsa said that the areas with the highest incidence of cases are the metropolitan region and the district of San Miguelito, in this capital, as well as the Caribbean province of Colón.

Another worrying fact is that the largest number of people who have died from dengue in Panama are over 65 years of age.
