South American Unions oppose Mercosur-EU Treaty

Montevideo, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) The Coordinating Committee of the Southern Cone's Trade Unions (CCSCS) is reportedly opposing a free trade agreement between the Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) and the European Union (EU).

This technical agreement was approved in this capital on Saturday, during the 65th MERCOSUR Summit, attended by the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

A meeting of the regional trade union representatives decided in this capital that what was agreed upon by the bloc’s leaders is detrimental to workers in the countries that make up the group.

The CCSCS is a group of coordination of the South American southern cone’s trade unions, supported by a constitutive treaty adopted in Buenos Aires in 1968.

At a press briefing here, the group’s General Secretary, Brazilian Quintino Severo, and union leaders from Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, and Argentina upheld MERCOSUR’s continuity as a regional integration program.
