University of Havana honors Cuban poet Nancy Morejon

Havana, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuban poet and writer Nancy Morejon, winner of the 2001 National Literature Prize, has been granted the Doctor Honoris Causa in Letters on Wednesday, bestowed by the University of Havana for her extensive cultural work.

The life and work of this outstanding literary critic and translator, whose 80th birthday was celebrated in 2024 by Cuban and foreign institutions, was honored in a solemn ceremony at the Main Lecture hall of that educational institution.

The Honoris Causa in Letters is a prestigious award granted by the University to those prominent figures who, through their work, contribute significantly to developing Cuban culture.

The Cuban intellectual directed the Center for Caribbean Studies at the Casa de las Americas cultural center in Havana for several years and has won the Critics Award four times for her books: “Nacion y Mestizaje en Nicolas Guillen” (Nation and Race Mixing in Nicolas Guillen, 1982); “Piedra Pulida” (Polished Stone, 1986); “Elogio y Paisaje” (Praise and Landscape, 1997); and “La Quinta de los Molinos” (The Farm of the Mills, 2000).

As a full member of the Cuban Academy of Languages and the Cuban Academy of Sciences, Morejon holds the Insignia of Officer of the Order of Merit of France and received the 2006 International Golden Crown Award of Macedonia, among other honors.

Her extensive literary work includes more than 30 published poetry collections, poetry anthologies, and essays, in which Latin American and Caribbean reality and contemporary conflicts related to the lack of racial and gender equality are essential themes.
