Speaking to Prensa Latina, Barnett recalled the difficult moments when, 52 years ago, four Caribbean countries decided to re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba and praised how they were strengthened to reach the deep bonds of brotherhood that characterize them today.
While ensuring the similar rejection of the presence of the Caribbean nation on the list of countries sponsors of terrorism of the US Department of State, the Caribbean leader pointed out the common position of the governments of the area expressed in different scenarios, including the annual meetings at the United Nations, in which the resolution condemning such policy is approved.
Barnett said that the resistance of Cuba is an example for the Caribbean countries, which also appreciate the help provided by the island in various areas, especially the training of human personnel.
“The future of relations between the CARICOM countries and Cuba cannot be other than one of greater strength,” Barnett said.
The Secretary General is developing an intense program in Cuba by participating in the activities of the International Conference for the Decade of Afro-Descendants: Equality, Equity, Social Justice, and the anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations with the Caribbean nation in 1972.
