CARICOM: Caribbean unity is vital to face common challenges

Havana, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Carla Barnett, said that the collective effort of the region will be decisive to overcome present and future challenges.

In exclusive statements to Prensa Latina, Barnett acknowledged that the effects of climate change, food insecurity, the fight for equality and the development of peoples, among others, constitute the most important threats for the region and to overcome them it is necessary to walk together and have common policies.

Barnett described 2024 as a very complex year, despite which and in the midst of many hardships, the CARICOM member nations showed willingness to work on national programs on highly sensitive issues such as those mentioned.

Barnett said that the Caribbean nations feel great satisfaction in having Cuba as an important ally with which we share a common origin and destiny and an example of resilience.

The Secretary General of CARICOM is visiting Cuba to participate in the International Conference for the Decade of People of African Descent: Equality, Equity, Social Justice, and the celebrations for the 52nd anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Havana.
