Uruguay’s health authorities warn of drowning on beaches

Montevideo, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay's health authorities are on the alert on Tuesday, as the southern summer season starts, bringing along risks of drowning on rivers and beaches of this country's Atlantic seashore.

Uruguay has reported 189 deaths from drowning between 2019 and 2023, with an average 35 people dying from this cause and a third of them are minors under 19 years of age every year.

“It is a serious public health problem in Uruguay and in the world,” said Health Minister Karina Rando, adding that the warning was issued on World Drowning Prevention Day, because it is “a serious public health issue.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most drowning deaths occur among children 1–4 years, followed by children 5–14 years.
