Protests in Brazil demand arrests and no amnesty for coup plotters

Brasilia, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) The "Brasil Popular" and "Pueblo Sin Miedo" fronts called for protests in 18 states and the Federal District under the slogan "No amnesty for coup plotters" on the occasion of International Human Rights Day.

The movements also demand the arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others accused by the Federal Police of attempted coup d’état in 2022.

On November 26th, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), sent the

the police investigation report of the coup attempt was sent to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR, Prosecutor’s Office).

Judicial sources indicated that in February the decision of the Prosecutor’s Office will be known on whether or not to charge Bolsonaro and the other defendants for the alleged plan against democracy.

The Federal Police’s final report also reveals that the evidence gathered unequivocally demonstrates that Bolsonaro “directly and effectively planned, acted and had control over the acts carried out by the criminal organization that aimed to carry out a coup d’état and abolish the Democratic Rule of Law.”

The investigation lists eight episodes pointing out the role of the far-right politician in the coup attempt.

If the PGR’s indictment is finally presented, the Supreme Court must decide whether to accept the charges and open a criminal trial. The case represents a significant test for democratic institutions and the ability of justice in Brazil to address high-profile crimes.

“Even coming from a political group with a notorious coup-mongering, authoritarian and anti-democratic inclination, the degree of violence and inhumanity is astonishing,” stated a joint note from trade union organizations such as the Central Única de los Trabajadores, the Central de los Trabajadores de Brasil, the Intersindical and Fuerza Sindical, which considered that the case meets the definition of political conspiracy and delves into organized crime and terrorism.
