Haitian human rights group’s appeal adds fuel to fire

Port-au-Prince, Dec 10 (Prensa Latina) Haiti’s National Network for the Defense of Human Rights has called on citizens to arm themselves with machetes and cut off the heads of gang members, an appeal that may add to the chaos currently gripping the country.

The executive director of the organization, Pierre Espérance, considered that this is the way to protect oneself from the violent acts of bandits.

“The population must continue to resort to legimate self- defense against attacks by gangs,” Espérance was quoted as saying by the digital daily Le Facteur Haiti.

He recalled that 96 bandits were recently annihilated in Port-au-Prince, thanks to the police-neighborhood unit. The appeal was issued amid the consternation of Haitians over the machete killing of 110 elderlies at the hands of a gang whose leader was influenced by a voodoo priest.

When the son of gangster Micanor Altes a.k.a Wa Mikano was agonizing, the voodoo priest told him his misfortune derived from witchcraft practitioners who had cast a deadly spell on his descendant, by making him sick to death.

After the boy died, his father sought revenge in all the sorcerers he could lay a hand on, proceeding to hack to death all those elderlies, escorted by his gang, the National Network of Human Rights specified in a preliminary statement.

The massacre began on Saturday and culminated on Sunday, in the Jeremie sector of Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince.
