Díaz-Canel visits Holguín municipality, in northeastern Cuba

Havana, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel kicked off a working visit to the eastern province of Holguín on Tuesday, as part of the Government's work system to approach the problems of local development.

On its X profile, the Presidency of the Republic reported that after visiting neighboring Granma, the head of State toured centers of economic and social interest in the municipality of Holguín, in the northeastern Cuba, on Tuesday afternoon.

At the Heroes of July 26 Mechanical Company (Holmeca), Díaz-Canel met with its directors about the technical and productive capacity of the industry, which was inaugurated by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro on July 27, 1981.

He also inquired about the first MTZ tractors assembled in the plant’s workshops, with technical assistance from specialists from the BZTDA factory in Belarus, and was informed by Holmeca General Director Reynaldo Pupo that 12 of those vehicles will be sold at DIVEP stores. Pupo provided detailed information to the president about equipment manufactured in Holmeca, including plows, cassava harvesting sub-welders, semi-trailers and others.

According to local media, Díaz-Canel was accompanied by the secretary of organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (PCC), Roberto Morales; the PCC first secretary in the province, Joel Queipo, and Governor Manuel Francisco Hernández.

The Adel Calderón Fonseca Agricultural Production Cooperative (CCS), in Holguín municipality, dedicated to various crops and the provision of various services, was the second stop during the tour, according to the local newspaper Ahora.

In that agricultural unit, Díaz-Canel, who is also the PCC first secretary, met with part of its members, made up of more than 320 partners, mostly young people. The CCS president informed the head of State that the cooperative has an area of 1,050 hectares, 150 of which are dedicated to various crops, the rest to forestry and livestock.

In 2024, the cooperative, made up of some 70 farms, will exceed the production plan, as well as the milk plan by more than 6,000 liters, Ahora reported.

Díaz-Canel also visited the Oscar Lucero campus of the University of Holguín, an institution with more than 10,000 students, officially created in November 1968, which trains professionals in the Exact, Economic, Technical, Agricultural, Legal, Social and Humanistic Sciences, as well as Pedagogical and Physical Culture Sciences.

Its rector, Aniuska Ortiz, referred to all four syllabuses implemented at the institution, including government program, the only one of its kind in the country, which was celebrated by the Cuban president.

Currently, the University of Holguín has 58 projects in execution, which contribute to strategic sectors for the economy and society, including food production, construction, tourism and the electro-energy sector.

The exchange with the academics also fostered an approach to the work done by the Provincial Council of Science and Innovation, the portal of the Presidency of the Republic added.

“At the forefront of this fight are those who dedicate their personal time, that of their families and friends, to give content, strength and above all results to the exercise of the People’s Power, a conquest of the Revolution,” the head of State said.
